Ayllu Proves Fine Dining Can Still Be Affordable
Is there such a thing as affordable fine dining? I found it, and I want to introduce you to Ayllu, a hidden secret in Paddington that blends Japanese craft with Peruvian comfort. It brings together quality, fair prices, and a calm atmosphere in a way that makes the whole evening feel special.
You first walk into Smiths Bar and Grill at street level, which feels open and lively. Then the team guides you downstairs and everything shifts. Ayllu is more intimate. The lights are low. The room feels warm and relaxed. The welcome is sincere and the service feels personal.

The menu was a pleasant surprise. It is not limited at all. There is plenty to choose from. You have a full a la carte selection, a generous sushi list, and several tasting menus if you want something longer. It works for different budgets and different moods.
For starters, I chose the tuna tacos. You get three pieces for a very fair price and the quality is strong. The chicken bao buns were crisp and full of flavour. The yuca fries with truffle mayo and manchego were a highlight, soft inside and crunchy outside. You will finish them without thinking about it.

They take their sushi seriously. Our mixed platter came with California roll, temaki, salmon and tuna sashimi, and three types of nigiri. Everything tasted fresh and clean. The cuts were generous. It felt like something you would expect to pay more for.
They also offer a good selection of meat, poultry, and fish. The menu suits anyone, which makes it easy to bring friends or book a group meal without worrying about preferences.
The drinks deserve a mention. I had the Paloma and it was perfect. Light, fresh, and balanced.
For dessert, I chose the churros with hazelnut chocolate. They were crisp, warm, and finished the evening on a sweet note without feeling heavy.

Ayllu is one of those places you want to tell people about because it feels like a genuine discovery. It is relaxed, stylish, and welcoming. The team takes good care of you. It gets busy at this time of year, so I suggest booking ahead to secure a good table.
If you go, let us know. I am sure the team will be glad to hear you visited through our recommendation.
